Surf Season Start Gear Check
Getting Ready for the Waves
A quick gear inspection before each session keeps you safe and comfortable in the water
Your Surf Season Gear Check Checklist
Inspect Your Board for Dings and Delamination. Run your hands along the entire surface, checking for soft spots, cracks, or areas where the fiberglass is separating from the foam. Small dings can be fixed with resin, but large damage needs professional repair. A compromised board loses performance and can get worse in saltwater.
Check Your Wetsuit Fit and Seams. Pull it on and make sure it doesn't bunch up or restrict movement. Look for tears, especially around the seams and neck. A leaking wetsuit defeats the purpose, so seal any small holes with neoprene cement or replace it if damage is extensive.
Test Your Leash and Connection Point. Attach your leash to your board and give it a firm tug. The attachment should be solid with no cracks around the plug. Replace your leash if the cord is frayed, kinked, or shows signs of wear. A broken leash means a lost board.
Evaluate Your Fins for Damage. Bent or cracked fins affect how your board turns and handles. Check the base where fins connect to the board and make sure plugs aren't loose. Bent fins can sometimes be straightened, but cracked ones need replacement.
Gather Your Accessories and Assess Condition. Sunscreen, rash guards, board wax, and any other items you use should be in good shape. Expired sunscreen won't protect you, and old wax becomes hard and ineffective. Replace what's worn out and stock up on essentials.
Why Your Surf Season Gear Check Matters
Common Questions
How often should I do a surf season gear check?
Ideally, check your gear before the start of each season and then every month or two during heavy use. After a particularly rough session or if you notice something feels off, inspect right away. Regular checks catch small problems before they become big ones.
Can I repair a ding in my surfboard myself?
Small dings can be fixed with a basic repair kit from most surf shops. You'll need resin, cloth, and sandpaper. For larger damage, delamination, or if you're unsure, take it to a professional repair shop. A poorly done repair can make things worse.
What's the best way to check if my wetsuit still fits?
Put it on and move around. It should feel snug but not restrictive. You should be able to raise your arms, bend at the waist, and move your legs freely. If it's bunching up, gaping at the neck, or feels too tight, it's time for a new one.
How do I know if my leash is safe to use?
Check the cord for fraying, kinks, or stiff spots that indicate damage. Make sure the connection to your board is solid with no cracks around the plug. If the leash is more than a couple of years old or shows any significant wear, replace it. A broken leash in the water is a real problem.
Should I replace my fins if they're bent?
Minor bends can sometimes be straightened by carefully applying heat and pressure, but it's not always successful. If fins are cracked, broken, or bent badly, replace them. Good fins make a huge difference in how your board feels and performs.
